The Reason behind Madness in Hamlet, a Take up by William Shakespeare

A well-known American novelist, Philip Kindred Dick, once said “It really is sometimes a proper response to fact to go insane.” His wise words reveal the reason for Hamlet and Ophelia’s madness in William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a tragedy about the Prince of Denmark who plots revenge against his Uncle Claudius for murdering his daddy, and taking his crown and Queen. Hamlet fakes his madness to verify his Uncle’s guilt, however, as the type of Hamlet evolves through the play, the reader commences to concern if Hamlet’s insanity is actually real. In his trip to get revenge, Hamlet will lose everything that was once dear to him, incorporating his beloved Ophelia. Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory will help the reader further appreciate the insanity depicted in Hamlet as it targets the mind of the type and reasons his/her actions.
